Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Resigns Early, Breaking Election-Era Practice

Kathmandu. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Indira Rana has resigned from her post despite having time left in her term. Traditionally, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker remain in office until the day before filing nominations for direct elections, but Rana stepped down voluntarily.

The Election Commission has set Sunday and Monday for submitting proportional representation closed lists ahead of the Falgun 21 elections. Meanwhile, Speaker Devraj Ghimire is preparing to step down on Magh 5, a day before direct nomination filing.

According to Nepal’s Constitution, officeholders may remain in their posts until the eve of candidate registration, a provision followed in past elections.
