Moscow – Russia is emerging as a new destination for Indian workers seeking better pay, even if it means switching professions. While many Indian engineers dream of careers in the United States, some are now choosing sanitation jobs in Russia due to higher wages.

Mukesh Mandal, a 26-year-old former software developer from India, moved to Russia four months ago. He currently works as a street cleaner in Saint Petersburg, earning around 100,000 rubles per month—approximately ₹110,000 (more than one hundred and seventy-six thousand Nepalese rupees), which is more than what he earned as an engineer in India.

This year alone, 17 Indian workers aged between 19 and 43 have arrived in Saint Petersburg to work in sanitation and road maintenance jobs. Their employer, Kolomyazhskoye Road Maintenance Company, covers paperwork, accommodation, and most living expenses, allowing workers to save a large portion of their income.

Mukesh says the nature of the job matters less than financial stability. He plans to work abroad for a few years, earn money, and eventually return to India. He adds that he respects his work and believes dignity comes from honest labor, not job titles.
