Kathmandu- Nepal’s layer poultry farmers, who had been facing losses for years, have finally started earning profits as egg prices increased nationwide. The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association announced new support prices effective from Tuesday.

According to the new rates, extra-large eggs are priced at Rs. 580 per crate (30 eggs), large eggs at Rs. 565, and medium eggs at Rs. 550. Previously, prices had dropped as low as Rs. 400 per crate, forcing over 75 percent of farmers out of the business.
Association president Binod Pokhrel said the price recovery became possible after illegal imports of Indian eggs were curbed. Due to elections and higher egg consumption in India, border enforcement tightened, reducing smuggling into Nepal.
With India also offering better prices, attempts to illegally import eggs have declined. The production cost of an egg in Nepal is about Rs. 16.57 per piece, and current prices allow farmers to make a profit. Increased winter demand has further boosted consumption, with daily production estimated at around 4 million eggs nationwide.
