Kathmandu — In a major blow to the government, the Supreme Court has overturned the decision to dissolve the Land Commission and its district offices. A joint bench of Justices Saranga Subedi and Shrikant Paudel issued an order to register the writ against the government’s move, effectively reinstating the commission.

The Cabinet had decided on October 9 to dissolve the Land Problem Resolution Commission and its district committees. Commission chair Hari Prasad Rijal filed a petition challenging the decision, after which the Supreme Court had already issued an interim order stopping its implementation. Today’s verdict solidifies the commission’s continuation.

More than 350 officials and members, along with over 1,100 employees, are currently working in the central and district offices. The petition argued that the government acted in a “retaliatory manner,” affecting over 1.1 million landless Dalits, squatters, and informal settlers who have applied for land resolution.
