Current IGP Chandra Kuwer Khapung will retire on Kartik 26, completing 30 years of service. Khapung had been in command since Bhadra 19.
In the race for IGP, Karki competed with AIG Rajan Adhikari, Dr. Manoj Kumar KC, and AIG Shiddhi Bikram Shah. Karki was promoted to AIG in 2082 B.S., topping the seniority list, and joined the police service as an Inspector on Chaitra 18, 2054 B.S. If there are no changes in police regulations, he is expected to lead the organization until Chaitra 17, 2084 B.S.
Karki has previously handled high-profile and challenging cases. Notably, he led investigations in the fake Bhutanese refugee case in 2080 B.S., when he was Chief of Kathmandu District Police. This case involved high-profile figures, including former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former Home Minister Rambhadur Thapa ‘Badal’s son Pratik Thapa, and other senior officials.
He also played critical roles during the Gen-Z protests and in commanding the Valley Police Office under challenging circumstances, demonstrating strong leadership and crisis management skills.
