Kathmandu: Kidneys play a vital role in keeping our body healthy. They filter blood and remove waste and toxins from the body.

However, when the kidneys start to fail, the signs are not only seen in the hands and feet but also in the eyes. In many cases, these symptoms may appear minor and are often mistaken for tiredness or lack of sleep. Ignoring them, however, can be dangerous and may lead to complete kidney failure.

Here are four key warning signs that appear in your eyes when your kidneys are not functioning properly:

1. Swelling around the eyes:
Puffiness around the eyes, especially in the eyelids, is one of the earliest signs of kidney damage. When kidneys are not functioning well, protein (especially albumin) leaks into the urine instead of staying in the blood. This loss of protein causes fluid to accumulate in tissues, resulting in noticeable swelling around the eyes.

2. Redness and itching in the eyes:
Constant redness or itching in the eyes can also be linked to kidney failure. When kidneys fail, the level of toxins and urea in the blood increases, leading to itching all over the body—a condition medically known as uremic pruritus.

3. Blurred vision:
If you suddenly experience blurry vision, it might be due to high blood pressure, which is closely associated with kidney damage. Kidney problems often cause or worsen hypertension, damaging the delicate blood vessels in the eyes, a condition known as retinopathy.

4. Eye bleeding:
Seeing blood in the eyes or noticing red patches is a serious warning sign. High blood pressure caused by kidney failure can rupture small blood vessels in the eyes, leading to internal bleeding or red spots in the white part of the eye.
