Chief Minister Sonal tendered his resignation today after realizing that he would fail to secure a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly. He had sought time to present his proposal but later announced his resignation in the assembly and submitted his resignation letter to the Province Chief.

Sonal, a leader of the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP), was appointed Chief Minister on 29 Asoj by Province Chief Bhandari.

The Madhesh Provincial Assembly has 107 members, and a majority of 54 votes is required to form a government. In today’s meeting, former Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh and former Minister Tribhuvan Shah, who recently joined the Janaswaraj Party from the Janamat Party, were absent.

The current ruling alliance in the province includes LSP (8 seats), JSP Nepal (18 seats), Janamat Party (13 seats), CPN (Maoist Centre) (9 seats), and CPN (Unified Socialist) (7 seats). The Nagarik Unmukti Party had already decided to support Sonal in the confidence vote.

However, Federal Socialist Party lawmaker Bimala Ansari was absent during the session, and Maoist Centre lawmakers Rahbar Ansari and Mala Rai openly rebelled in the assembly, further weakening Sonal’s support.
