Kathmandu — The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday held a discussion with businessman Durga Prasai, who has announced a nationwide protest starting Mangsir 7.

According to NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tika Ram Pokharel, the meeting was called out of concern that the upcoming protest could turn violent, as previous demonstrations on Chaitra 15 and Bhadra 23–24 had caused significant damage.

The discussion, attended by NHRC Chairperson Tap Bahadur Magar and Secretary Murari Prasad Kharel, lasted for about an hour. Prasai assured that his protest would remain nonviolent.

However, speaking to the media afterward, Prasai claimed that the Commission expressed solidarity with his demands, including concerns over migrant workers’ deaths and microfinance-related suicides.

NHRC spokesperson Pokharel denied Prasai’s claims, saying, “The Commission does not support or endorse any demands. Our sole purpose was to urge that protests remain peaceful.”

He added that the Commission plans to hold further discussions with security agencies to prevent potential violence during the announced protest.
