Kathmandu—Approximately 53,000 naturalized citizenship records were destroyed in the Ministry of Home Affairs during recent protests.

According to Ravindra Acharya, Assistant Spokesperson, some of these records had already been digitized, but the computers and laptops containing the entries were also destroyed in the fire.

Last year, the government planned to digitize naturalized citizenship records, with about 17,000 entries already completed.

Who qualifies for naturalized citizenship:

  • Foreign men married to Nepali women

  • Foreign women married to Nepali men

  • Children born to Nepali women and foreign men residing in Nepal

  • Individuals who have resided in Nepal for 15 years

All these records were maintained at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
