Carpenters from Rajasthan are reportedly teaching this illegal technique. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched an enforcement drive with police support to arrest those involved.

The inspection campaign, conducted from October 8 to 17destroyed fake paneer, khoya, and other products worth approximately 1.5 crore INR. Confiscated fake paneer in districts like Noida, Hapur, Meerut, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Gorakhpur contained palm oil, urea, detergents, and other synthetic chemicals instead of milk.

How to distinguish real vs fake paneer:

  • Real paneer: Soft, milky smell, floats in water.

  • Fake paneer: Hard, rubbery, chemical smell, sinks in water, sticks together.

  • Melts or cracks in hot water.

  • Iodine test: Real paneer’s color does not change, fake paneer turns blue or black.
