Sonal submitted his claim for the post with the support of 57 provincial lawmakers from six parties. Meanwhile, Congress parliamentary leader Krishna Prasad Yadav claimed he had support from 13 provincial lawmakers and also filed a claim.

After Janamat Party lawmakers backed Sonal, the Province Head Office appointed him, sparking tensions between the rival factions.

As a result, outgoing Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh and former Minister Tribhuvan Sah Deepak joined the Janaswaraj Party, and minor clashes occurred during the appointment proceedings.
