Kathmandu — Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, has been arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) on 10 Poush 2079 in connection with a gold smuggling case worth over Rs 85.5 million.
The case dates back to 10 Poush 2079, when Chinese national Li Hansong arrived in Kathmandu from Fly Dubai flight FZ0587, carrying two suitcases containing 730 vape devices packed in 73 boxes. Investigations revealed that the vapes were used to conceal gold.

According to CIB, the gold—valued at over Rs 85 million—was sold with the alleged collusion of customs officer Rewant Khadka and others. Mahara is accused of using his political influence to pressure customs officials to release the gold consignment.
His son, Rahul Mahara, was earlier arrested and jailed in the same case. CIB reports indicate that call records show consistent communication between Mahara, his son, and Chinese nationals Lui Hansong and Daoniz Wang, who were directly involved in the smuggling.
Authorities had delayed progress in the case due to political influence, but the investigation has now resumed, leading to Mahara’s arrest following a detailed interrogation earlier this week.
