Kathmandu – The average age for a girl’s first period is around 13, but doctors say early menstruation—starting at 11 or 12—is becoming more common due to changing diet, lifestyle, and environment. Parents need to prepare their daughters early with the right guidance and awareness.

Teach Pad Use Early:
Since menstruation can begin anytime, teach your daughter how to use sanitary pads beforehand. Encourage her to carry one in her school bag once she nears puberty. Remind her to change pads every two hours to avoid infection.

Maintain Hygiene and Readiness:
Explain the use of pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, and keep them available at home. Teach her to carry an extra pair of underwear to school in case of heavy flow or leakage.

Pain Relief Matters:
If she experiences severe cramps, tell her not to suffer in silence. Painkillers can help when prescribed by a doctor. Warm, nutritious food and using a hot water bag can also ease the pain.

Normalize Body Changes:
Menstruation comes with natural physical and emotional changes. Encourage open conversations, help her understand her body, and eliminate shame or embarrassment. This openness builds comfort and confidence.
