Kathmandu – The Government of Nepal has decided to provide Rs 1 million each to the families of Nepali citizens who lost their lives during the ‘Gen Z’ protests on Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082. In addition, families will receive Rs 500,000 each to cover funeral, food, and transportation expenses. However, the decision will not apply to inmates and juvenile detainees who died while attempting to escape during the unrest.

Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel informed that the decision was taken during Thursday’s cabinet meeting.

The meeting also approved the Government of Nepal (Work Division–Third Amendment) Regulation, 2082, transferring the Department of Revenue Investigation and the Department of Money Laundering Investigation under the Ministry of Finance, while moving the National Investigation Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Similarly, the cabinet endorsed Nepal’s fourth-cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR) national report for submission to the UN Human Rights Council and approved the visit of the Finance Minister and Finance Secretary to attend the World Bank–IMF Annual Meeting in the United States.

Other key decisions include extending by 45 days the term of the taskforce led by former secretary Ram Prasad Dotel to recommend uniform pay and benefits for officials and employees of public enterprises, appointing Janak Raj Sharma (Deputy Director General, Inland Revenue Department) as acting Chairperson of the Nepal Insurance Authority, and publishing in the Nepal Gazette the rule requiring municipal approval for real estate transactions exceeding Rs 30 million within metropolitan and sub-metropolitan areas.

On military matters, the cabinet approved the promotion of nine Major Generals to Lieutenant General, the transfer of three Lieutenant Generals, and the promotion of two Brigadier Generals to Major General.

Furthermore, the government decided to designate the Director General of the Department of Information and Broadcasting as the local authority for online media registration, approve the Security Printing Regulation 2082, formally appoint Minister Kharel as the government spokesperson, and authorize an organizational and management survey of the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration.

The meeting also decided on several promotions and resignations of senior civil servants and announced the formation of five committees under the cabinet: Political, Economic and Infrastructure, Administrative, Legislative, and Social.
