Kathmandu—Rabilaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, who was severely injured in a fire during the Gen Z protests, is being taken to India for further treatment.

Currently receiving care at Kirtipur Burn Hospital, Chitrakar developed fever and pneumonia, prompting her family to arrange treatment at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. She will be accompanied by her son Nirbhik.

Due to severe injuries, her left arm had to be amputated earlier. According to senior plastic surgeon Dr. Shankarman Rai, her life is no longer in danger, though recovery from pneumonia will take time.

Dr. Rai explained that her lungs were heavily affected by smoke inhalation during the fire. “She had pneumonia. A lot of toxic gases had entered her lungs, and we used machines to clear them,” he said.

Although her health has shown improvement, the family decided to take her to India to aid in faster recovery. Dr. Rai confirmed that about 15 percent of her body was burned.
