Kathmandu- The U.S. Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery 2027 is expected to open in early October. The U.S. Department of State will soon publish details, including application dates, eligibility criteria, and the list of eligible countries, on its website and in the Federal Register.

Although the Trump administration proposed making passports mandatory, the rule is unlikely to affect DV 2027 due to the time required for implementation. Once in effect, applicants will need to provide passport details and digital scans.

The State Department believes that requiring passports will help prevent fraud. In the past, unauthorized third parties submitted applications without consent, demanded money, or used fake documents.

For Nepali applicants, the DV program has been a crucial path to the U.S. green card. Since 1995, a total of 56,124 Nepalis have obtained green cards through the lottery, with participation steadily increasing in recent years.

In DV 2025, out of 13,106,000 applications worldwide, 55,000 visas were available, and 3,861 Nepalis were selected, ranking Nepal third in Asia.

The State Department has advised Nepali applicants to stay prepared for DV 2027 and to be cautious of fraud and counterfeit documents.
