Kathmandu — An elderly woman has died, and her husband is in critical condition after food was allegedly poisoned in Morang district. The incident occurred in Belbari Municipality–2, Singhdevi Tole.

Seventy-seven-year-old Indramaya Rai died during treatment, while her 70-year-old husband, Bhakta Bahadur Rai, is undergoing treatment at Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar. Local residents found Bhakta Bahadur unconscious near a stream close to his house on Saturday. Upon bringing him home, his wife was also found unconscious.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate food poisoning. The suspicion was strengthened after three chickens were found dead at the scene. Authorities have arrested 32-year-old Sunita Karki, the nephew’s wife, on charges of involvement in the incident.
According to police, Karki admitted to mixing poison into the food and later burning the poison container in a traditional stove. The burned container has been recovered. Further details regarding the poison and motive will be confirmed after postmortem, forensic, and laboratory reports. Police are continuing the investigation under a homicide-related case.
