Chitwan – The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers’ Association has once again raised the support price of eggs. According to the new rates effective today, an XL crate (30 eggs) will cost 560 rupees, large eggs 545 rupees, medium 500 rupees, and small eggs three thousand rupees per peti (7 crates).
Association president Binod Pokharel explained that due to bird flu many chickens died, production fell, and demand rose, leading to the price hike. However, farmers are still not receiving the actual cost price. One egg costs 19 rupees 12 paisa to produce, which means a crate should cost 573 rupees 60 paisa.
Farmers have suffered heavy losses from bird flu. With reduced production, disease outbreaks, and low returns, many have been forced to rely on bank loans. In recent years, some farmers have even abandoned poultry farming altogether.
