Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Nepal has recorded the highest petroleum prices among South Asian countries. Compared to neighboring nations, the sharp rise in petrol prices in Nepal has directly impacted household budgets, transportation, and freight costs.
According to current market rates, petrol in Nepal has reached Rs. 219 per litre, which is significantly higher compared to seven other South Asian countries.
Petrol Price (per litre / in Nepali rupees)
- Nepal: Rs. 219
- Pakistan: Rs. 194
- Sri Lanka: Rs. 187
- Bhutan: Rs. 157
- India: Rs. 157
- Maldives: Rs. 153
- Afghanistan: Rs. 140
- Bangladesh: Rs. 140
Rs. 62 more expensive than India and Bhutan
In India and Bhutan—both neighboring countries of Nepal—the petrol price stands at Rs. 157 per litre. Compared to these countries, Nepali consumers are paying Rs. 62 more per litre. Even countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which are going through economic crises, have cheaper petrol prices than Nepal.
Rising prices and government role
Experts say that fluctuations in international crude oil prices, along with various taxes and administrative costs imposed by the Nepal government, have contributed to the higher fuel prices.
On social media and in public discourse, criticism has been growing with questions such as “Whose interests is the government serving?” While neighboring countries are providing relief to citizens through price adjustments and tax cuts, Nepal’s higher fuel prices have raised concerns about government policy.
The silence of concerned authorities has further increased the burden on consumers.
