Prakash Kafle / Kathmandu. Air entering the vagina during sexual activity is related to various physical and mechanical factors. It is a completely natural process that can sometimes produce a sound (queefing). The reasons why air enters the vagina are outlined below:
1. Thrusting Motion
During sexual intercourse, the in-and-out movement of the penis works like a piston. When the penis is withdrawn, outside air can be drawn into the vagina, and when it moves back in, that air is pushed further inside. This repeated motion allows air to enter easily.
2. Expansion During Arousal
During sexual arousal, the inner part of the vagina naturally expands and becomes softer. This increases the internal space, allowing external air to enter more easily. It is a normal bodily response that helps make intercourse more comfortable.
3. Sexual Positions
Certain sexual positions, especially those where the hips are elevated (such as “doggy style”), can increase vaginal openness due to gravity. In such cases, the likelihood of air entering is higher. Body angle and depth also influence this process.
4. Movement and Muscle Activity
The physical movements during intercourse, body motion, and the contraction and relaxation of muscles can facilitate air entering the vagina. This is more noticeable during fast or deep movements.
5. Pelvic Floor Muscle Tone
If the pelvic floor muscles are somewhat weak or relaxed, control over the vaginal opening may be reduced. In such cases, air can enter more easily and may sometimes produce sound when it is released. This can happen after childbirth or with aging.
Conclusion
Air entering the vagina is not a disease or abnormal condition; it is a normal physical response. Only if it is accompanied by pain, discomfort, or other unusual symptoms (such as a foul smell or severe pain) should medical advice be sought. Otherwise, it is completely normal and harmless.
