Prakash Kafle / Kathmandu. Nepal government has decided to increase the fares for public transport and freight vehicles. The Department of Transport Management is preparing to implement the new fare rates after receiving theoretical approval from the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport. According to Saroj Sitoula, Senior Vice President of the Nepal National Transport Entrepreneurs Federation, fares for public transport have been increased by 16.71 percent. Similarly, fares for freight vehicles have also seen a significant rise. Freight vehicles operating in hilly regions will have their fares increased by 21.68 percent, while those in the Terai region will see a 15.75 percent hike.
The department stated that the ministry has already granted theoretical approval for the fare increase, and detailed information on the new fares will be officially published on the department’s website soon.
Transport entrepreneurs had long been requesting fare adjustments, citing reasons such as rising international petroleum prices, vehicle maintenance costs, and driver–assistant salaries.
Once the new fares are implemented, the daily travel expenses for the general public will increase, and higher freight costs may lead to a rise in the prices of consumer goods. This has raised concerns about further inflation in the market.
