Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. According to the World Happiness Report 2026, Nepal has been ranked as the happiest country in South Asia, securing the 99th position globally. Although Nepal’s worldwide ranking slipped slightly from 92nd in 2025 to 99th this year, it continues to lead its regional neighbors including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The report, which evaluates over 140 nations, highlights Nepal’s consistent performance in social support and community resilience despite various economic challenges.
In the broader regional context, Pakistan follows Nepal at the 104th spot, while India is ranked 116th. Other South Asian nations like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka trail further behind at 127th and 134th, respectively. Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the global list at 147th. Globally, Finland maintained its title as the world’s happiest country for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Iceland and Denmark. The rankings are determined based on six key variables: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
Note: Nepal’s drop from 92nd to 99th indicates a slight decline in the overall happiness score compared to last year, yet its regional lead remains unchallenged.
