Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Eid al-Fitr is being celebrated today across South Asia, including Nepal. While Muslim communities in Gulf countries observed the festival on Friday, countries like Nepal, India, and Pakistan are celebrating it today after the moon was sighted on Friday evening. This year, Muslims began observing fasting from the holy month of Ramadan starting from Falgun 7 (according to the Nepali calendar). During Ramadan, adult men and women fast from dawn to sunset as prescribed in Islam.
On the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, people gather at nearby mosques or Eidgahs to perform special congregational prayers. After the prayers, it is customary to greet one another warmly, often embracing and exchanging good wishes. A special traditional dish called “sewai” (sweet vermicelli cooked in milk) is commonly prepared during this festival. Wearing new clothes and sharing happiness with family and friends is also an important part of the celebration.
Among the five pillars of Islam—faith, prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage—fasting holds the third position. Eid al-Fitr marks the joyful conclusion of a month-long period of fasting.
