Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. CPN (UML) Vice-Chairman Surendra Pandey has issued a stern warning to the party leadership, stating that failing to correct past mistakes could lead to a near-total collapse in the next general elections. Speaking at an event organized by Chintan Abhiyan Nepal in Butwal on Saturday, Pandey remarked that the party’s influence has been rapidly shrinking over the last three election cycles. Using a striking metaphor, he noted that while the party celebrated a landslide victory with 174 seats in 2017, its presence dwindled to “a single bus” in 2022, and could eventually be reduced to a number that fits on “a single scooter” if the current trajectory continues.
Pandey emphasized that if the leadership refuses to acknowledge failures and undergo rigorous self-correction, the party will struggle to even find candidates willing to contest future elections. He identified the lack of a constitutional term limit—restricting party chairs or Prime Ministers to only two terms—as a significant systemic oversight. Furthermore, he cautioned that if traditional political parties do not change their working styles, they risk a collective political demise, urging an immediate shift toward a more accountable and transparent direction.
