Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), riding high on a near two-thirds mandate with 182 seats in the House of Representatives, has officially scheduled the formation of its government for March 26 (Chaitra 13). A decisive meeting held on Thursday evening at Hotel Royal Singi, involving Chairman Rabi Lamichhane, Senior Leader Balen Shah, and Vice-Presidents DP Aryal and Swarnim Wagle, concluded that Balen Shah will lead the new administration as Prime Minister.
The constitutional path to power was cleared after the Election Commission submitted the final election results to President Ram Chandra Paudel on Thursday. Under Article 76(1) of the Constitution, the President is now expected to call upon the leader of the majority party to claim the premiership. Following this timeline, newly elected MPs will take their oath of office on March 25 (Chaitra 12) at the Federal Parliament building in Singha Durbar. Immediately after the swearing-in, the RSP will formally elect Balen Shah as the Leader of the Parliamentary Party.
General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti confirmed that the Prime Minister and a core team of ministers are expected to take their oaths of office on March 26. Chairman Rabi Lamichhane has emphasized a merit-based approach for the cabinet, urging lawmakers to rely on their expertise rather than political lobbying. Meanwhile, the Parliament Secretariat has proposed summoning the first session of the new parliament on March 29 (Chaitra 16). As the new dominant political force, the RSP has already secured the largest parliamentary office space, previously held by the Maoist Center, marking a significant shift in Nepal’s political landscape.
