From Lectures to Guidance: How a Japanese School Boosted Academic Scores by Ending Traditional Teaching

Pressadda

Prakash Kafle ,Buddhikrishna Gautam/Kathmandu. A school in Japan has achieved remarkable academic success by abandoning the traditional lecture-based teaching model in favor of a modern, student-centric learning approach. By moving away from the conventional method where teachers lead the class from the front, the school has created an environment that encourages students to take ownership of their education. In this new system, teachers act strictly as facilitators or guides, while students engage in self-study, solving complex problems using tablets and textbooks.

This shift from passive listening to active participation has significantly boosted the students’ analytical and critical thinking skills. As a direct result, the school reported a 10-point increase in ‘Hensachi’—a standardized score used in Japan to measure academic proficiency. This success story reinforces the idea that understanding-based learning is far more effective than rote memorization, proving that empowering students to learn independently can lead to extraordinary academic breakthroughs.
