Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Nepal Students Union (NSU), affiliated with the Nepali Congress, has warned the incoming government not to attempt to dissolve student organizations. Speaking at the union’s senate meeting held in Kathmandu on Friday, president Dujang Sherpa cautioned that any such move would lead to serious consequences. He stated that dissolving student unions would be “like putting one’s hand into a ball of fire,” signaling strong resistance from the organization. Sherpa emphasized that student unions are an integral part of democratic practice, representing student voices and advocating for their rights. According to him, banning such organizations would amount to suppressing youth participation and weakening democratic values.
He further noted that student organizations have historically played a significant role in raising issues related to education reform, social justice, and student welfare. Therefore, any attempt to eliminate them could negatively impact not only the academic environment but also the broader democratic system.
The NSU has urged the new government to avoid unilateral decisions in the name of reform and instead move forward through dialogue and cooperation with concerned stakeholders. It has also indicated that it may launch protest programs if there is any interference with student organizations.
The stance of the incoming government on this issue, however, has not yet been made clear. Meanwhile, as debates continue over regulating political activities in educational institutions, the NSU’s warning is likely to intensify political discussions in the coming days.
