Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. Former President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav has emphasized the critical need for the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to honor and effectively utilize the historic “supermajority” mandate it recently secured. Speaking at a ceremony in the capital on Tuesday for the launch of Bipul Pokhrel’s new book, Sankalpan, Dr. Yadav pointed out that while several political entities in Nepal’s history have been granted two-third majorities, they consistently failed to deliver on their promises or maintain political stability. He warned that this new mandate must not be squandered like those of the past, urging the party to translate public trust into tangible national progress.
During his address, the former head of state also expressed concern regarding the role of the opposition in the current parliamentary climate. Responding to discourse about a potentially “opposition-less” parliament following the RSP’s landslide victory, Dr. Yadav asserted that a functioning democracy is incomplete without a respected and active opposition to provide necessary checks and balances. He concluded by reminding all political actors that the current Constitution was achieved through immense sacrifice and struggle, and therefore, all political maneuvers and governance must remain strictly within its framework to ensure the long-term health of the republic.
