Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. You must have definitely seen something shining in the sky on Sunday evening, right? Many people may have noticed a bright and unusual object shining in the sky on Sunday evening. At first glance, it might have looked like a UFO, a meteor, or even something mysterious. However, the truth behind the phenomenon is different from what many initially thought.

On Sunday evening, the strange glowing formation seen from several places across Nepal quickly became a topic of discussion on social media. Many users speculated that it could be a UFO or another unidentified object, but experts later clarified the real reason behind the sight.

According to specialists, the phenomenon was caused by the launch of the Long March rocket family, specifically the Long March‑6A rocket launched by China. The rocket was launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center located in Shanxi Province in northern China. It carried a remote sensing satellite named Yaogan‑50 02 into space.

Reports say the satellite was launched at around 9:22 PM, and it successfully entered its designated orbit shortly after liftoff.

Scientists explain that when a rocket travels toward space, gases released from its upper stage expand at extremely high altitudes. When sunlight hits these expanding gases, they can create a bright cone-shaped or spiral-like glow in the sky. This optical effect is what people in various parts of Nepal witnessed.

The satellite is expected to be used mainly for Earth observation tasks such as land surveys, crop production monitoring, and disaster prevention and response.

According to China’s space program, this launch marked the 633rd mission of the Long March rocket series.
