Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is preparing to amend its party statute in order to appoint senior leader Balen Shah as the leader of its parliamentary party.
The party had already announced Balen Shah as its prime ministerial candidate before entering the election campaign. According to party leaders, RSP secured nearly a two-thirds majority in the election.
According to party co-spokesperson Pratibha Rawal, since Shah was declared the party’s candidate for prime minister before the elections, discussions are underway to amend the party statute so that he can also serve as the parliamentary party leader.
Currently, Article 66 of the party statute outlines the procedure for selecting the parliamentary party leader. It states that before federal elections, a leader should be chosen through an election among interested candidates selected by the party under both proportional and direct electoral systems.
The same article also provides that all general members of the party are eligible to vote in the election to choose the parliamentary party leader. The RSP is now considering revising these provisions.
Rawal stated that the exact details of the proposed amendment have not yet been finalized. She added that the party will discuss possible changes to simplify the process, especially since a prime ministerial candidate had already been announced before the election.
