Pressadda

Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu — Former Gandaki Province Assembly member Rajiv Gurung, widely known as Deepak Manange, has been released from Dillibazar Prison on Wednesday.

According to prison chief Baburam Aryal, Gurung was released after completing the remaining portion of his sentence.

Manange had been convicted for attacking Milan Gurung, also known as Chakre Milan, with a sword on May 13, 2004 (Baisakh 31, 2061 BS), an incident that resulted in severe injury to Milan’s hand. The Supreme Court of Nepal later found him guilty of attempted murder. After a lengthy legal process, the Supreme Court on November 5, 2024 (Kartik 20, 2081 BS) upheld a five-year prison sentence, affirming the earlier ruling made by the Patan High Court.

Gurung had filed an appeal at the Supreme Court on May 6, 2018 (Baisakh 23, 2075 BS). Prior to the final verdict, he had already served two years and eight months in prison. He was required to serve an additional two years and four months, but the Kathmandu District Court granted a 20 percent sentence reduction on March 7, 2025 (Falgun 23, 2081 BS). After completing the adjusted sentence, he was released from custody.
