Contempt of Court Case Filed Against UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet

Pressadda

Prakash Kafle/Kathmandu.   A contempt of court case has been filed against Mahesh Basnet, secretary of the CPN-UML. The petition was registered on Wednesday, and the court has scheduled the preliminary hearing for Sunday, Chaitra 1. The petition was filed by advocate Lawan Nyaupane, who argued that Basnet’s public remarks undermined the dignity and credibility of the judiciary. The statements in question were made during an interaction program organized by Press Chautari Nepal on Magh 11.

According to the petition, Basnet made controversial comments suggesting that the Chief Justice and other judges were often inactive, delaying judicial procedures, or acting under fear, pressure, or inducements. He also alleged that judges sometimes avoided responsibilities by turning off their phones or stepping aside from judicial processes.

The petition further states that Basnet publicly claimed Nepal was facing foreign influence and that the country’s entire judicial system had been weakened.

Advocate Nyaupane has requested the court to take legal action against Basnet for contempt and impose appropriate punishment in order to uphold the authority and integrity of the judiciary.
