Kathmandu. A contempt of court case has been filed against CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet. The hearing in the case against Basnet, which was registered today, has been scheduled for Sunday, Chaitra 1.
Advocate Lawan Neupane filed the case on Wednesday, saying that the statement he made at an interaction organized by Press Chautari Nepal on January 11 constituted contempt of court.
The writ petition states that Basnet made statements at the program that ‘judges including the Chief Justice disappear due to unexplained illnesses, delay the judicial process due to panic, fear or greed or interference, do not provide justice, are under pressure, think that an impeachment will come tomorrow or are afraid of national and international powers, and that judges including the Chief Justice turn off their phones and avoid the court.’
The writ petition also mentions that Basnet publicly disrespected the court by saying, “We are under foreign attack and not only our Supreme Court, high and district courts have been burnt, but our entire justice system has been burnt.”
Writ petitioner Neupane has demanded that UML leader Basnet be prosecuted for contempt of court and given the maximum punishment to uphold the supremacy of an impartial judiciary.
