Prakash Kafle/ Kathmandu. In the remote village of Gehlaur in Bihar, India, the extraordinary life of Dashrath Manjhi, famously known as the “Mountain Man of India,” has become a symbol of love, perseverance, and human determination. Manjhi’s remarkable journey began with a personal tragedy that shook his life. His wife, Falguni Devi, suffered a fatal accident while crossing a steep and dangerous mountain path to bring him food. The nearest hospital was more than 55 kilometers away, and she could not receive timely medical attention. Heartbroken and enraged by the inaccessibility of basic healthcare, Manjhi vowed that no other villager would ever face such hardship due to natural barriers again.

Armed with nothing but a hammer, a chisel, and relentless determination, Manjhi embarked on a mission that seemed impossible. Starting in 1960, he began to carve a path through the mountain, working alone day after day. Villagers initially mocked him, calling him insane, but he ignored their ridicule and continued his task for 22 years. Over decades of tireless labor, Manjhi successfully cut a road 110 meters long, 9 meters wide, and 7.6 meters deep, reducing the distance between Gehlaur and the nearest town from 55 kilometers to just 15 kilometers. His work not only made travel and transportation far easier but also saved countless lives by providing timely access to hospitals and emergency services.

Manjhi’s efforts eventually gained national recognition. His unwavering dedication and extraordinary feat of carving a mountain earned him the admiration of people across India. The Government of Bihar formally honored him, and his story was immortalized in the 2015 Bollywood biopic, Manjhi – The Mountain Man, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Dashrath Manjhi passed away in 2007, but his legacy endures as an inspiring testament to the power of human will and the lengths one can go for love.

Beyond being a story of personal loss, Manjhi’s life demonstrates the impact of determination on society. His solitary effort transformed the lives of thousands of villagers, granting them access to essential services that had been out of reach for generations. Today, his story continues to inspire people worldwide, showing that no obstacle, no matter how massive, is insurmountable when confronted with perseverance, courage, and love. Dashrath Manjhi proved that even a mountain could bow to the indomitable spirit of a determined human being.
