Kathmandu – A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitude struck the Sulu Sea in Malaysia. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 12:57 a.m. local time on Monday.
Although the epicenter was located deep under the sea, some distance off the coast of Sabah, its depth was found to be very significant—around 620 kilometers. The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department reported that, so far, there have been no reports of damage to infrastructure or human casualties. Authorities have increased monitoring along coastal and high-risk areas.
Malaysia’s Meteorological Department also urged the public not to panic and to continue with their regular activities. Residents of Sabah and Sarawak felt mild tremors lasting a few seconds. In addition to Malaysia, light shocks were also reported in tall buildings in neighboring countries such as the Philippines, Brunei, and Singapore, according to local media.
