Kathmandu – The District Administration Office, Kathmandu, has imposed a curfew inside the premises of Tribhuvan International Airport. The local administration announced that starting Thursday, the curfew will remain in effect for one month. With this order, gatherings of more than five people for sit-ins, protests, blockades, rallies, demonstrations, or assemblies will not be allowed inside the airport compound.
The curfew was imposed after some groups and political parties issued statements calling for demonstrations at the airport and surrounding areas on February 13 (Falgun 1).
According to the order issued by Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Paudel: “From the Golden Gate entrance to the entire airport compound, including all roads, domestic terminal, international terminal, parking areas, and other premises, gatherings of more than five people for sit-ins, protests, blockades, rallies, demonstrations, or assemblies are prohibited.”
The order states that organizing such protest programs in a highly sensitive area like the airport could lead to unruly activities such as vandalism or arson by agitated crowds.
It further clarifies: “Outside the restricted areas, every citizen has the constitutional right to freedom of thought and expression, and to peacefully assemble without arms for protest programs. The local administration remains committed to protecting these rights.”
The administration also warned that if any protest program causes damage to government, public, or private property, compensation will be recovered from the organizers.
The curfew comes after Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and royalist groups announced plans to hold a grand welcome for former King Gyanendra Shah at Tribhuvan International Airport on February 13.
