Kathmandu. Journalist Ishwar Aryal has raised a serious question regarding Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, who is contesting the upcoming House of Representatives election from Jhapa-5. Aryal’s concern emerged after a video circulated on social media showing Balen campaigning while driving a Land Rover Defender worth nearly NPR 80 million.

Aryal said the luxury vehicle was imported only a few months ago and is currently owned by only a handful of wealthy individuals in the country. He questioned whether the car belongs to Balen or if it was borrowed, gifted, or provided by a supporter. Aryal also pointed out that, as the former mayor of Kathmandu, Balen likely did not earn enough to buy such an expensive vehicle.

Aryal’s criticism gains weight because the campaign is happening in Koshi Province, where the Central Bureau of Statistics recently reported that about 17.19% of the population lives below the poverty line. The journalist highlighted that poverty means being unable to meet basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and clothing.

Aryal questioned the meaning of such extravagance in a country where leaders like Oli, Prachanda, or Deuba have never been seen using such luxury vehicles. He argued that if old leaders lived in luxury, now it is the new generation’s turn, but even the “new” leaders seem to follow the same pattern.

Finally, Aryal expressed his concern about Nepal’s future, saying he is unable to see a better future for the country unless leaders provide clear answers about such displays of wealth.
