Kathmandu: A petition has been submitted to the Election Commission of Nepal demanding that the name, election symbol, flag, and guiding ideology of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) remain unchanged.

The petition was filed by Janardan Sharma’s Progressive National Campaign, which included the martyr’s descendant, Sandeep Pun, and other leaders.

According to campaign leader Rajman Tamang, since the party has already announced its general convention date, Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) cannot make any long-term decisions that would alter the party’s identity.

The petition states that the current committee of the Maoist Centre is merely a “General Convention Organizing Committee” and therefore cannot take decisions with long-term political implications, such as merging with another party or abandoning Maoism.

Tamang emphasized that the party’s name, flag, and election symbol are tied to the people’s war and the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs, the injured, and the disappeared, and thus cannot be changed under external pressure.

The petition warns that if the Commission freezes the party’s identity or bars it from participating in elections, it would raise questions about the legitimacy of the electoral process itself.
